Even when people mock the former Mayor of Kampala Nasser Ntege Sebaggala commonly known as Seya, of murdering the queen’s language, with the acquired degree from Leeds University, he seems never to pick up! Last Monday, Seya stood in the commercial court in Kampala and requested Commercial Court judge Christopher Madrama to allow him deliver his testimony in Luganda. Every one present wondered what more drama could Seya play?
In 2012, Seya dragged MTN to court for unlawfully using his voice recording in various ringtones. The voice recordings in contention were extracted from oral statements made by Seya in 2011 at Parliament during his vetting process, while he was a ministerial nominee that ended up being used as call back tunes. Seya, who had initially demanded Shs 35B, which he is said to have arrived at after costing Shs 500 per download of close to 10 million MTN subscribers, said he had decided to ask for a more humble figure of Shs8b from the telecom company.
The case which was presided over by Judge Christopher Madrama was supposed to be heard on Monday, where Sebaggala dramatically asked the judge the he wanted to express his testimonies in Luganda because it was a language he is conversant with. When the judge didn’t respond positively to his requests, then a suggestion of an interpreter was raised.
Can you imagine a person craving for a ministerial post on the cabinet of the Republic of Uganda can’t express himself in the official language of the country? That’s why the judge ended up adjourning the case to October 14, when it will be up for hearing.
