Cranes striker Yunus Sentamu was on Monday voted the Nile special-Uganda Sports Press Association (Uspa) personality of January at the scribes monthly meeting in Kampala.
The Vipers teenage striker beat KCCA FC, who won the Mapinduzi Cup, and chess player Ivy Amoko – who claimed the Rwabushenyi Chess memorial tournament, to the accolade by 35 votes. Sentamu polled 455 points, KCCA 420 and Amoko 325 respectively.
Sentamu was voted for his excellent performance in the Cranes African Nations Championship (Chan) outing.
The 19-year old scored all three Cranes goals including a brace against Burkina Faso in the 2-1 win in the opener in Cape Town and one in the 3-1 defeat to Morocco as Uganda crashed out in the group stage.
Sentamu also became the youngest player to score for the Cranes in open play since 1976. Former Express FC player Godfrey Kisitu held the record.
Uspa recommended Yusuf Babu of Cobap boxing club for having stood out as the best boxer in the just concluded National Boxing Intermediates.
Others commended were the Ugandan basketball, netball and handball teams for winning in their respective disciplines at the Mapinduzi tournament.
Woodball star Lillian Zawedde also got a nod for having won a bronze medal at the 2014 India International Woodball championship.
