Sports Club Victoria University (SCVU) will represent Uganda in the newly-formed regional club championship.
It emerged on Wednesday that a new club competition that will have winners of cup competitions across the region will compete against each other for the title.
The inaugural Cecafa Nile Basin Cup winners’ Cup will be hosted by Sudan from 20 May to 5 June.
“Cecafa’s member associations together with Democratic Republic of Congo and Egypt have also been offered the chance to nominate clubs to take part in the tournament,” reads a communication from Fufa.
“Federations were asked to nominate teams that won their Knockout Cup tournaments or finished runners up in their respective national leagues.”
In an earlier communication sent to Fufa, the Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye welcomed the new idea.
‘As a region, we need as many competitions as possible to strengthen our clubs and give them a competitive edge at the continental stage,” said Musonye.
“Once this event gets off, we are of the opinion of launching Cecafa Champions League,” said Musonye. Cecafa and Sudan will cater for costs of travel and accommodation for all teams.
However, Fufa may have to reschedule Uganda Cup semifinal fixtures if the club are to honour the new competition.
The fixtures released on Wednesday indicate that first leg games will be played on 9 May and returns on 23 May. SCVU are already in the semis of Uganda’s oldest cup competition.
