There are many people who shy away from even mentioning sex during periods. The idea of having sex during menses is frowned upon as many believe it is more painful or dangerous, or it might affect a man’s performance levels. However there is no basis of these assumptions.

Protect yourself and cut the risk of STDs
Safe intercourse is quite crucial during menses because there is a likelihood of contracting STDs and other blood-borne infections. While you are menstruating, your cervix opens and allows some amount of blood to pass, which in turn allows bacteria to traverse deep inside your pelvic cavity. This way you are more likely to infect yourself with bacterial and yeast infections, such as candidiasis or bacterial vaginosis because your vagina’s pH is less acidic while you are on your periods. So, make sure you use proper protection and minimise the risk during periods.
Look at the bright side
If you reach orgasm during the love making session, you end up inadvertently relieving yourself of PMS symptoms. This happens because when you reach that point the happy hormones, namely endorphins are released and these act as a springpad for your mood and perform the role of natural pain reliever. Moreover, the contractions of the uterus offer a comforting internal massage and enhance your mood, soothe cramps and erase irritability often associated with periods.
Use a Dental Dam
Should your man choose to indulge in some oral sex, considering the health aspect of it, you must encourage him to wear a dental dam. Dental dam is a latex sheet mainly used in dentistry, to reduce contamination.
Snub the mess worry
If you are worried about staining the sheets, you can play safe and spread a towel on the bed and then hit the ‘let’s do it’ button. If you want to spice up things a little and try something new- you can head towards your bathroom.
Celebrate shortened periods
It is every girl’s dream to have shorter periods, and having sex in a way helps too. When you are on your periods (not interrupted by sex) the involuntary muscle spam along the uterine wall push the blood out of your body within a span of 3 to 5 days. However, when you orgasm during sex, the muscle spams are faster and they expel the menstrual fluid and tissue even faster. Hence, you have a shortened period.
Chances of getting pregnant is not null
It is quite true that there is a minimum risk of pregnancy during periods. Yet it must not be undermined because women may conceive at other times of the month too. So if you are thinking of giving protection a skip, you might as well think it over and choose to do otherwise.
