Rwandan artistes have joined hands in a new campaign to address nutritional issues in their community, the best way they know how. Several top Rwandan musicians including Miss Jojo, King James, Riderman, Tom Close, and Urban Boyz have teamed up to sensitise the local populace about the benefits of healthy feeding through music.
The campaign that started back in September with artistes holding several road shows across the country to sensitise the masses, has culminated into a music video highlighting the benefits of eating iron-rich beans.
“Almost 40% of Rwandan children do not get enough iron, leading to poor health,” its noted in the video. “Beans are a favorite food in Rwanda. The beans are rich in nutrients and should be eaten everyday.”
The campaign to sensitise the public about the health benefits of consuming iron-rich beans is organised by Harvest Plus, an international non-governmental organisation, in partnership with the Rwanda Agriculture Board.
The campaign is said to have seen tremendous success with now more than 700,000 Rwandan farmers growing and eating these nutritious beans that were first released by the Rwandan Government in 2011. These beans are also now available in Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda.
