Video: Rihanna teaches math to kids in Malawi

When Rihanna isn’t cranking out hits or shutting down her critics, she spends a lot of her time trying to give back to the world. She has won awards and respect for her charitable activities, thanks to the work she has done to make the world a better place.

Her charity, the Clara Lionel Foundation, has teamed up with the Global Partnership for Education and Global Citizen as part of an initiative to provide quality education for the world’s poorest children. Their goals are lofty. Rihanna wants to raise $3.1 billion in order to bring education to over 870 million children around the world within the next few years.

The work of the group took them on a recent journey to Malawi, a small, rural country in southeast Africa that is dealing with consistent budget challenges. The trip produced a mini-documentary, and it is equal parts heartwarming and heartbreaking to watch.

It’s hard not to feel your heart swell as Rihanna and local educators help students work through problems, teaching children through song throughout the video. “I love that they learn in melody,” said Rihanna. “They adopt melody really, really quickly. And so if you can use that as a learning tool, I think that’s the most brilliant, brilliant thing.”

Other parts of the video really hit you in the gut. There’s a section in the middle where a boy talks about struggling just to be able to eat every day, though he claims he’s not worried because he’ll have plenty of food when he’s a businessman as an adult. His spirit makes you want to fight that much harder so kids like him have increased opportunities in life, but it’s hard not to feel overwhelmingly sad that any child would have to live like this.
