Reggae artiste Junior Murvin dies, aged 64

Jamaican reggae star Junior Murvin has died at the age of 64.

The singer – best known for the single ‘Police and Thieves’ – is said to have died peacefully at his home in Port Antonio, Jamaica, earlier yesterday (December 2).

Murvin’s son Kevin Smith, told the Jamaica Observer that his father had been admitted to hospital last Thursday to undergo treatment for diabetes and hypertension. A post-mortem will be held to determine the cause of death.

The star – born Murvin Junior Smith – began his career under the name of Junior Soul and recorded over a period of more than 30 years.

He shot to fame following the release of ‘Police and Thieves’ in 1976. The track became an international hit, as well as developing a close tie with London’s Notting Hill Carnival.

The singer also performed with Jah Postles, one of Jamaica’s leading bands, in the 1990s. With the group, he toured several countries in Europe including the UK, France and Germany.

Murvin scored several other notable hits during his career, including ‘Miss Kushie’, ‘Cool out Son’, and ‘Muggers in the Street’.
