Hip-hop artiste with no time for beef, St Nelly Sade, recently talked about the secret behind his stage name following questions from fans to reveal the truth behind his choice of name.
The thinker, lyricist, poet and storyteller revealed that it was all from things to do with matters of the heart although this was a sad love story. “My real name is Nelson Nsubuga. About eight years ago, I was in deep love with someone named Sade. She was from Finland,” he talked about his love story that led to the birth of his stage name.
“After one and a half years in the relationship, she succumbed to lung cancer. So I decided to cut my name short from “Nelson” to “Nelly” and add “Sade” to honour her memory,” he added.
The nonsmoker and liquor free artiste also revealed where he got the “St.” bit in his name. “The Saint bit is because I neither smoke, use drugs nor drink alcohol. Saint was given to me by friends. So that is where St. Nelly-Sade came from.”
Nelly is known for songs like Nzijukira, Tubaale and Neighbor (Kankuwaaneko) off his debut album, The translation (Okutaputa), then Nina Plan, Bakoowu, Ebbaluwa (Suicide Note) off his latest album, Stories Of Elevation (Omulondo N’engero).
Away from music, St Nelly Sade is the ‘End of the weak’ ambassador for the Ugandan chapter.
We will keep you posted.
