Renowned Ugandan singer and Chairman of the National Cultural Forum (NCF), Ragga Dee, has confirmed that the long-awaited amendment to Uganda’s Copyright Law will be finalized and signed before December 2024.
He made the announcement during the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF) weekly jam session in Mutundwe, stirring excitement among the country’s creative community.
The current Copyright Law has long been a source of frustration for many Ugandan creatives, with artists expressing concerns that their works often go unrecognized and uncompensated.
For years, musicians, filmmakers, and other creators have called for reforms to ensure they receive financial recognition for their hard work.
During his speech, Raga Dee emphasized that the revised law would mark a significant change for the creative industry in Uganda, which has struggled under the outdated legislation.
“This new law will address the concerns of our artists and ensure they benefit financially from their creativity,” he said.
The heads of major musical bodies, including artist Eddy Kenzo, and representatives from government entities have hinted at the law’s impending implementation, promising relief to the creative sector.
The forthcoming changes are expected to enhance the protection of intellectual property and provide a better framework for enforcing the rights of creators in Uganda.
For many artists, this development could lead to increased revenue opportunities and better protection of their intellectual property.
With the law’s approval expected before the end of the year, Ugandan creatives are hopeful that their voices will finally be heard.
