President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed seasoned journalist and broadcaster Allan Kasujja as the new Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre, replacing Ofwono Opondo, who resigned earlier this year to pursue elective politics.
The appointment is contained in a letter dated December 27, 2025, addressed to the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and reveals the President’s direct involvement in the decision-making process at the Media Centre.
In the letter, President Museveni said he was responding to concerns raised over management issues at the institution.
“I have received your letter dated the 27th November, 2025, regarding the Media Centre. I was not aware of the on-going manoeuvres,” Museveni wrote.
The President further disclosed that Allan Kasujja’s appointment had been discussed earlier at the highest levels of leadership.
“However, some weeks ago, we had discussed the idea of Allan Kasujja with you,” Museveni stated.
He went on to direct the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Dr Chris Baryomunsi, to begin the formal appointment process and also assess potential candidates for the position of Deputy Executive Director.
“By the copy of this letter, I direct Dr Chris Baryomunsi to initiate the procedures of appointing Allan Kasujja and, additionally, assessing the others as to who could be the Deputy,” Museveni added.
Kasujja officially takes over from Ofwono Opondo, who stepped down in April 2025 after years of service as the government’s chief spokesperson.
Allan Kasujja brings to the Uganda Media Centre over 30 years of experience in broadcast journalism, both locally and internationally.
He first rose to prominence in the 1990s while working at Sanyu FM and Capital FM Uganda, before becoming a household name as the long-serving host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Uganda, a role he has held since 2011.
Kasujja later joined the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), where he spent 13 years as a senior presenter on the World Service’s flagship programme Newsday. He also hosted the popular Africa Daily podcast, earning respect across the continent for his incisive interviews and balanced reporting.
He exited the BBC in August 2025.
In addition to his broadcasting career, Kasujja co-moderated Uganda’s historic 2016 presidential debate, the first of its kind in the country’s electoral history.
