Bastille Day, a French national holiday which is celebrated on 14th July every year, commemorates the storming of the Bastille in 1789, a turning point of the French Revolution. It is the symbol of the end of the monarchy and the beginning of the Republic.
Addressing guests at the event, H.E Stephanie Rivoal noted, “On this particular edition of the Bastille Day in Uganda, our message is about the (R)evolution of society.”
“We need to pay more attention to the growing extremism and populism in our society. There is a need to remain strong on the values of the French revolutionaries: ‘Liberty, Equality, Fraternity’. Liberty for the freedom of all mankind. Equality between people, between all human beings irrelevant of their differences. And most importantly fraternity for the solidarity with one another, never forgetting that peace is key to happiness.”
The ceremony was attended by expats and diplomats among others who wined and dined till late as they departed at leisure.
