Pharrell Williams has scored his third million selling single in the UK with ‘Happy’.
The singer becomes the only act apart from The Beatles to achieve three million sellers within a year, following the successes of Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’ and Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines’ in 2013.
‘Get Lucky’ passed the million sales barrier in June 2013, while ‘Blurred Lines’ reached the milestone a month later.
As well as matching the record held by The Beatles, Williams also becomes only the third act in UK chart history to achieve three million selling singles.
The Beatles have six million sellers in total: ‘She Loves You’, ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand, ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’, ‘I Feel Fine’, ‘We Can Work It Out’/’Day Tripper’ and ‘Hey Jude’.
Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’, ‘Only Girl (In The World) and ‘Love The Way You Lie’ with Eminem have also sold over a million copies in the UK.
Martin Talbot, chief executive of the Official Charts Company, commented: “This past year has been a stellar one for Pharrell, breaking Official Chart records left, right and centre with that seemingly Midas touch of his.
“Now with three UK million sellers under his belt, and a new solo record to look forward to in the coming months too, it looks like his chart domination will continue in 2014.”
‘Happy’ returned to the number one spot in the UK tonight (March 2), and begins a fourth non-consecutive week at the top of the chart.
