People Power Mobiliser and Digital Content Manager, Alex Kabugo is on the run following information that an arrest warranty has been issued in connection with mobilizing the Pressure Group’s members for a consultation meeting which was due to take place on 24th/Feb/2020 at Pope Paul Hotel Ndeeba, spearheaded by movement leader – Robert Kyagulanyi.
Uganda Police however blocked the event because it was deemed an unlawful assembly. Police armed with live ammunition and tear gas dispersed Kyagulanyi’s supporters, arrested some while Rita Nabukenya lost her life when a Police patrol car ran over her while she on a motorcycle headed to the venue.
“A very sad day! Yet again, police has murdered one of our solid leaders of the People Power Movement. Police saw Rita Nabukenya wearing People Power colours on a boda boda, run after her with a police patrol truck and knocked her dead. …..We must do everything in our might to ensure that Rita and other fallen comrades like her, get justice,” a brief statement that was posted on Bobi Wine’s social media platforms, reads in part.
Uganda Police Force denied the accusations saying Nabukenya died from injuries sustained following a boda boda accident. Kabugo who has been working alongside Nabukenya and other leaders narrowly escaped. However the hunt is still on for him and other mobilisers in connection to the event.
This is not the first time security has been on the spot for the death of a People Power supporter. As Kyagulanyi and his supporters returned from Nabukenya’s burial on 25th February, 2020 another supporter Dan Kyeyune was shot through the eye and died instantly.
