Parliament has directed the Ministries of Tourism and Ethics and Integrity to stop the forthcoming famous Nyege Nyege festival in Jinja over claims of promoting immorality.

This is after Members of Parliament described the event as a breeding ground for sexual immorality.

Efforts by the Minister of State for Tourism Hon. Martin Mugarra to defend the event as a hub of tourism met resistance from the House.

Hon. Mugarra’s revelation that over 8,000 foreigner tourists have already booked tickets for the event fell apart.

During the Parliamentary sitting on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 Speaker Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among noted that its not comfortable for the country to promote tourism at the cost of its young generation.

“We are talking about morality of this country; we are talking about our children. You are trying to promote tourism at the expense of our children?” Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among said.

Speaker Among vowed not to permit the event to happen.

“We are not going to allow this function (Nyege Nyege) to take part,” the speaker added.

‘Nyege Nyege’ festival, an annual social event was slated to take place next week in Jinja.

Nyege Nyege is now held yearly at Itanda Falls since 2015.

One has a chance to experience, a unique, culturally significant and iconic venue facing the majestic Itanda falls on the Nile River. It’s one of the most breathtaking natural spots in East Africa and a site of great cultural importance for the Busoga people.

Nyege Nyege offers a rare opportunity to see African electronic musicians who seldom play outside their home countries, and has come to be regarded as the African capital of the global bass music scene.

A team of musicians and promoters from Uganda and Europe curate the international lineup of artists, who have come from Uganda, Ghana, Mali, Kenya, South Africa, Niger, Burkina Faso, Somalia, and Ethiopia, as well as the U.S., UK, Russia, Japan, Germany, Belgium, and Mexico.

We will keep you posted with new developments in this story.
