Oprah Winfrey ‘Sorry’ For Reaction to Swiss ‘Racist’ Incident

oprah-inside1Oprah Winfrey said she was sorry for the uproar and media response caused by her comments about an incident in a Swiss luxury store last month when an assistant refused to show her a $38,100 handbag.

At the premiere of her new film, “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” in Los Angles on Monday evening, the U.S. actress and talk show host, recently named by Forbes as the world’s most powerful celebrity, said she regretted saying it took place in Switzerland.

“I’m really sorry that it got blown up. I purposefully did not mention the name of the store. I’m sorry that I said it was Switzerland,” she told reporters on the red carpet.

“I was just referencing it as an example of being in a place where people don’t expect that you would be able to be there,” she added.

Winfrey, 59, said in television interviews last week that while she was in Switzerland for the wedding of singer Tina Turner last month a sales assistant in a Zurich shop had refused to show her a luxury handbag by designer Tom Ford, saying it was “too expensive” and instead suggested cheaper bags.

Swiss tourism officials said it regretted the incident and the owner of the Tom Ford boutique, luxury shop operator Trois Pommes, denied racism, saying it was a misunderstanding.

“This has nothing to do with racism. I am here for everyone and the customer is king,” shop owner Trudie Goetz said last week.

Goetz added that the sales assistant had wanted to show Winfrey, who earned an estimated $77 million in the year to June 2013, that the bag was available in other materials, which may have given the impression that the shop did not want to sell it to her.

“It’s not an indictment against the country or even that store,” Winfrey explained. “It was just one person who didn’t want to offer me the opportunity to see the bag, so no apologies necessary from the country of Switzerland.”

In “The Butler,” which deals with race issues and opens in U.S. theaters on Friday, Winfrey plays the wife of an African-American butler who worked at the White House for eight U.S. presidents.

The handbag incident sparked criticism in Switzerland where media reported last week that local governments were given authority to prohibit asylum seekers from using public sports venues like municipal pools, prompting criticism from advocacy group Human Rights Watch. A government minister denied the reports.

Uganda’s undisputed Queen of Radio, Karitas Karisimbi, will be one of the very few entertainment personalities that will have some reasons to look back at the Coronavirus pandemic.

Ever since she started co-hosting Nxt Radio’s “Morning Zoo” alongside the fellow veteran Marcus Kwikiriza, Karitas has been on an upward spiral, with her crazy sense of homour.

In a sit-down discussion we had with her, she dished out on the gist;

“I’m officially starting my second month as the Morning Zoo co-host. I love the show; it is a mature place (is that a dig at Ronnie McVex, with whom she fought while they worked together on Nxt Radio’s Transit?). I jell well with Marcus because I’ve known him for a long time, and the fact that we’re agemates, work is more than fun. Its morning laughs and more jokes during those 4 morning hours. It’s one great way to start my day every day,” Karitas said of her transition from the evening drive show to the early morning show.

Nalongo, as she is popularly known, smilingly hinted that waking up early is a challenge she looks forward to conquering.

When Nxt Radio first announced the move to pair the Old Skool duo, there was excitement among Nxt Radio’s online fans that had occasionally demanded the duo. Its therefore likely that the move was provoked by audience feedback and brought to life by the General Manager, Marcus that it a good move to make mornings on radio more fun.

Karitas, just like Marcus, is an experienced media personality, mostly remembered for her hugely successful stint as host of the then-famous `Showtime Magazine’ on WBS TV in the early 2000s.

The past month the morning duo have spent together has provoked chemistry with a cocktail of humour and fun, a litmus test we are looking forward to taking after 100 days of the Morning Zoo with Marcu and Karitas. The innovation has been of a brain thinking outside the box. In the past 30 days, we noticed the duo hosting the show on Fridays’ from the luxurious Mestil Hotel amidst delicious breakfast snacks and suspected expensive “teas’ with Italian names.

The “Morning Zoo” has introduced what they have called “Fro-Back Fridays,” playing some of the best old school music to kickstart their audiences’ weekends, with different guest-DJs playing every week.

You can catch Marcus and Karitas on the “Morning Zoo” Monday to Friday from 6:00 to 10:00 am on Nxt Radio 106.1 FM, or StarTimes Channel 234 (this is part where you can watch the duo live on air). Alternatively, you can stream them LIVE via the Nxt Radio app or through nextradio.co.ug/live.

Former employee of 88.2 Sanyu FM, James Onen aka Fatboy is set to return on radio after almost two months of unemployment.

Fatboy was fired in June this year after reportedly masterminding a sit-down strike at the Kampala based ‘urban music station’.

This sent the radio management despairing for Fatboy’s quick replacement in the Sanyu FM Breakfast Club show and it’s perfect choice landed on comedian Patrick Salvado Idringi and RadioCity’s Miss Deedan.

The good news for Fatboy’s fans is that he has now new commitments with Reckless Radio.

His services will be in ‘The Fat Boy’ show airing from Monday to Friday, 6AM-10AM.

“The Fatboy Show” is a top quality 4-hour daily entertainment radio show hosted by James ‘Fatboy’ Onen, veteran radio presenter who for over two decades has been a dominant voice on morning prime time FM radio.

Joining him is Olive, a soft-spoken intellectual with a background in news, and the attitude of a soldier.

Reckless Radio is a Uganda-based digital radio station created by James ‘Fatboy’ Onen that aims to serve the needs of a growing class of media consumers who are looking for high quality radio content.

Congratulations FatBoy!
