August 13, 2025, marks one year since the passing of Joseph Tamale Mirundi Senior, a renowned Ugandan political commentator, journalist, and former presidential press secretary, who left an indelible mark on Uganda’s political and media landscape.

His son, Tamale Mirundi Junior, has taken to social media to honor his father’s legacy, reflecting on his profound impact and announcing plans for an annual remembrance to keep his memory alive.
In a TikTok video, Tamale Mirundi Junior paid tribute to his late father, who passed away on August 13, 2024, at Kisubi Hospital in Kampala due to lung-related complications.
Mirundi Senior, born in 1964 in Matale-Kalagala Village, Kyotera District, served as President Yoweri Museveni’s press secretary for 13 years until 2015. Known for his sharp analytical skills and unapologetic defense of the President, he earned both admirers and critics, leaving no one indifferent. After his dismissal, he continued to shape public discourse through television appearances and vlogs, cementing his status as a polarizing yet influential figure.
His passing was mourned by prominent figures, including Speaker of Parliament Anita Among and Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who praised his patriotism and contributions to Uganda.
In his TikTok video, Junior expressed gratitude to key government figures for their support during and after his father’s death. He specifically thanked President Museveni, Gen Salim Saleh, Speaker Anita Among, and other “government bigwigs” for their contributions to the family during their time of grief. Junior also reminded President Museveni of his pledge to support the education of Mirundi Senior’s children, emphasizing the importance of fulfilling this commitment to ensure the orphans’ future.
Junior announced that November 25, a date significant as both his and his father’s birthday, will be marked annually with a memorial mass to honor Mirundi Senior’s life.
He called on well-wishers to contribute to this event, envisioning it as a yearly tradition to celebrate his father’s legacy. “November 25 was a special day for both of us,” Junior said in the video, underscoring the emotional weight of the shared birthday.
He urged the public to join the family in making the remembrance a meaningful tribute to a man whose voice shaped Uganda’s political discourse.
