I was in campus for six years. That’s how long you take to complete an architecture course. I however enjoyed every minute of it.
Everything good for me started in campus; my music, my life, I even met my wife in campus. I launched my music career in second year, and it was never easy. I had to be disciplined to succeed in my field of study. I remember releasing a hit in my final year, but failed to go for gigs because I needed to put a lot of time in my studies.
At times, I feared my lecturers would find out about my music and thought they would see me as a less serious architect. I can’t remember a particular lecturer who was better than another, they were all supportive even after they got to know about my music.
Music in fact was paying a greater part of my fee, right from third year to the end. Sometimes toward fourth year, I developed this undying addiction for sneakers. I would spend up to Sh5,000 on sneakers. This was no little money at the time. I would stock up different colours almost monthly.
We were so frugal in our spending in campus, in fact, it’s the most economical place I have ever been. Everything was low-priced. Once in a while, I would take my girlfriend, now my wife, out for lunch at Steers.
As a couple, we were popular in campus, since both of us were musicians. We were young, but still learnt to deal with the popularity. Majority of friends around me were supportive of my relationship and music.
Being outgoing, I did a lot of things in campus, none of which I can say I regret…because in the end, they have shaped my decisions and my life to date. I blacked out once at a party in college, and from then, I have learnt to do everything in moderation. Nameless graduated with a Bachelors of Architecture degree at The University of Nairobi Class of 2002.
