Word on the grapevine has, for some time now, been that NTV Uganda is creating a new channel to cater for its Luganda-speaking audience though nothing really conclusive came up. However, new information seems to affirm that NTV Uganda, the Serena Hotel based station owned by Kenyan media conglomerate Nation Media Group, is in final stages of signal test and launch of a new all-Luganda sister TV station.
NTV, which went on air in December 2006, has over the past few years slowly and painstakingly tried to appeal to both the ‘urban’ English-speaking viewers and yet also to the ‘common man’. Running premium segments like ‘The Property Show’ alongside Luganda acted local plays.
With some viewers complaining of how ‘local’ NTV had started to slowly become, it’s no wonder that the powers that be instituted such a change. The yet-to-be-revealed station is expected to be an all-Luganda station that will carry some of the current Luganda programmes currently running on NTV alongside new content.
