At Kyambogo University where the students will be voting for the next Guild President on 12th March this Thursday, the situation has been tense.

There’s a possibility that a volcano of violence will erupt anytime from now. The vote that has divided Kyambogo Students along all possible lines, ethnic and aesthetic has proven to be the most competitive of all time.

Unlike in the past where there were over 5 candidates, this time round there are only three candidates. In actual sense, there are two candidates since the third candidate, Proscovia Nantege has no strong supporters and clout.

It’s majorly between Ian Kafuko of NRM and Julius Nsubuga of FDC. NRM is set out to claim its first victory in the Kyambogo Guild Race. Many think it’s now or never for NRM.

Word from the NRM camp shows that they are not ready to accept anything less of victory come Thursday. “They (FDC) either lose or we win. This is our time. It’s our moment. We won’t accept anything other than victory. We are ready to fight if possible,” says an NRM supporter.

In his last words to his supporters, Kafuko assured them that the time has come for Kyambogo to be rebranded. “FDC has led for long and nothing has amounted out of its leadership. All we want is a chance for NRM to prove its worth. We won’t sleep from now on until we have victory in our palms,” he commented.

Julius Nsubuga of FDC on the other hand confirms that no amount of intimidation will deter voters from lining up in huge numbers to cast their votes. Nsubuga spent most of Tuesday afternoon greeting voters by Banda opposite Erima hostel.

We await to see which side takes it all. This maybe the most violent election in the history of University Politics and we hope Police will turn up to maintain law and order to the maximum.
