Popular messaging service Whatsapp has reportedly added a new feature to its smartphone software- the ability to record and send voice messages.
In a bid to compete with other services like Facebook Messenger, WeChat, Voxer and BBM which already have this feature, Whatsapp is the latest to add this ability to the 300 million people who use its app at least once a month, BBC reports.
An analyst at Ovum, Neha Dharia said that in south-east Asia and parts of Africa voice messages are popular as an alternative to typing on phones’ English-style keyboards and with markets where literacy is low, Whatsapp will do much better with this service.

Although, Whatsapp is not putting any duration limit on voice messages sent, the software has been designed in a way to automatically play the records through headphones if plugged in or otherwise and users can also see when their recording has been listened to.
