Reigning champion Novak Djokovic knocked out of Australian Open

The world number two came out second best in a five-set battle that lasted for four hours.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic has been sensationally knocked out of the Australian Open.

The world number two lost 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 9-7 to number eight seed Stanislas Wawrinka on Tuesday to surrender his crown.

Djokovic had been on a 28-match winning streak since losing the US Open final last September – and a 25-match winning streak here. The Serb had been seeking to become the first man in the Open era to win four consecutive Australian Open titles.

Wawrinka reached the semi-finals of the US Open last year after beating Andy Murray before losing to Djokovic in five sets.

The classic lasted exactly four hours and was briefly interrupted by rain before the roof was closed. The Serbian, who had reached the last 14 Grand Slam semi-finals, missed an easy volley put-away on match point.

Wawrinka, who lost 12-10 to Djokovic in the fifth set here last year, now faces Tomas Berdych, who beat number three seed David Ferrer.
