NIGERIA’S BASKETMOUTH WINS SAVANNA PAN-AFRICAN COMIC OF THE YEAR AT THE ANNUAL SOUTH AFRICAN SAVANNA COMICS’ CHOICE AWARDS

Published

on

It is the one night of the year where comedians, industry, friends and fans come together to celebrate the best in comedy from across Africa. On Saturday 8 September, the 8th Annual South African Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards® was hosted at The Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City in Johannesburg – an event hailed as the largest comedy awards gathering of its kind on the continent.

It all kicked off on the famous Yellow Carpet where comedians, celebs and the who’s who of the industry strutted their stuff to the flashes of cameras and the bright lights of TV crews vying for their attention.

From there the more than 1,200 guests filled the theatre’s plush red seats to watch as the unique and hilarious awards show unfolded on stage, itself a world-class production of lighting, costume design, sound and technology.

Every year is unique, but this year was certainly one of the best in the awards’ eight-year history. Themed around the “Rhythm of Funny”, every detail, line and song spoke to the fantastic fusion between music and comedy, beautifully and masterfully told through well-written and choreographed performances.

The true showstoppers of the night, however, were definitely the 12 award recipients across the 12 categories, with this year’s Savanna Pan-African Comic of the Year Award going to Basketmouth from Nigeria.

This is the second time the Savanna Pan-African Comic of the Year Award has been given out – and this is also Basketmouth’s second win. He was one of five Pan-African nominees in the running to win the 2018 Waldo statuette, along with Carl Joshua Ncube (Zimbabwe), Kansiime Anne Entertainer (Uganda), Salvado (Uganda) and Charles Manase (Botswana), all of whom were flown to South Africa and hosted by Savanna and the awards teams.

With ongoing commitment from long-term sponsor Savanna Premium Cider, this category is set to grow further and reach more comedians across the continent.

The Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards wishes to thank all its sponsors, partners and long-time friends of comedy, without whom the awards wouldn’t be possible: Savanna Premium Cider, Chatz Connect, Kaya FM 95.9, IOL, 1Magic DStv Channel 103, Sound Stylists and Stageworks.

Published

Ugandan maestro singer Bebe Cool over the weekend attended the universal health coverage conference at the Kigali convention centre in Rwanda and talked to young people all over Africa. Considering the singet is Ambassador for Tuberclosis, he was best candidate to discuss health issues. The singer after he conference had the following remarks “Today, I was honoured to interact with over 400 youth from 25 countries all over Africa and the world at the launch of the Youth for Universal Health Coverage Conference at the Kigali Convention Centre in Rwanda. These young people have been deliberating for days with an aim of finding solutions to health care access for all youth in Africa. I am happy that for the first time, African youth have been given an opportunity to identify their own challenges and to also participate in finding practical solutions through their talents, connections and passion. These youth under a theme “Nothing about us, without us”, asked that they be included in decision making processes that impact their livelihood. I challenged them to question their motives for demanding a sit on the table of MEN. Are they coming with practical solutions or joining with an attitude of entitlement. I advised them to desist from making impractical demands but to concentrate on identifying challenges and suggesting realistic solutions. On the same day, I was privileged to have interacted with some of the most influential people in the noble business of health care. In meetings with me was the Senior disease coordinator of the Global Fund Dr Eliud Wandwalo, the head of community rights and gender at the Global Fund Ms Kate Thomson, the Group CEO of Amref Health Africa Dr Githinji Gitahi, the Rwanda Minister of Health Dr Diane Gashumba, the Liberia deputy Minister of Health Ms Norwu Howard, Uganda’s National TB and Leprosy Commisioner Dr Stavia, Mr Jacob Creswell, the team lead Stop TB partnership and Thandi Katlholo also of Stop TB partnership, and many other distinguished dignitaries. Tomorrow I will be participating as a panelist in two UNITED NATIONS HIGH LEVEL MEETINGS- TB Symposium”
