It is none other than “Ngayaya” a traditional Tooro song that features on every wedding in this Kingdom.

You can listen to a version of this song here: https://youtu.be/bvuGIUiA9og

The song’s lyrics are commended for their poetic depth.

This love song praises a woman in all aspects. In one of the lines, the man compares his lover to a papyrus plant that he has to harvest with both hands. It goes; “oli kafunjo komunyanja muhuma wange niko baihisa emikono yombia muhumawange.” Translated, this means; “you are the papyrus reed of the lake that they pull gently with both hands.”

The song beat thousands of other Ugandan songs from all regions, from all genres to emerge as the best of all time. Finally the Batooro have something to brag about.

Here are the lyrics to the song:

Ngayaaya Ngayaaya Muhuma Wange *2
Owaitu kitara ky’anyamenge muhuma wange
Omunsi etagata omunkungu z’abago muhumawange
Okangoonza nyakugonza muhumawange
Otalinoba ntakunobere muhumawangee
Obwoolinoba ntakunobere muhumawange
Ndyeegoromora omunyanja rweru muhumawange

Oyangasana nk’orukwanzi muhumawange
Obunkuroraho mpunabuhuna muhumawange

Olikafunjo k’omunyaja muhumawange
Niko baihisa emikono yombi muhumawange

Okandagisa enseko y’ensi muhumawange
Obunkwijuka nseka nyenka muhumawangee
