Uganda’s President Museveni on Tuesday tapped Jessica Alupo, the former Education minister and retired UPDF Major, as Vice President and named outgoing junior Health State Minister for General Duties Robinah Nabbanja as prime minister and Rtd Hon, Rebecca Kadaga as the first deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Affairs.
This is the second time that the second highest office of the vice President is held by a woman in Uganda and the first time in the position of Prime Minister.
In 1994, Dr Specioza Kazibwe became the first female Vice President in Uganda. Making her the first woman in Africa to hold the position of vice-president of a sovereign nation.
Since then more women have risen to become vice presidents and even Presidents including the recent rise of Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu Hassan who became the first female President in East Africa.
The National Women council spearheaded by the council treasurer Akwi Norah Robinah has come out to hip praise and thank President Museveni for finally fronting Women in his recent released Cabinet.
Speaking to the Media today, Akwi, who looked excited revealed that it’s time for the Ugandan Women to shine and take Uganda to the next level.
“As Ugandan hard working women, we are super excited and happy that the president has decided to trust Women to secure Uganda’s future. As a council, we are appreciative and pledge our loyality and hard work towards our nation building” Akwi stated.
She went on to say that when you educate a girl child, you build a strong and trustworthy nation.
“Women in nature have always been known to be trusted, hard working and not corrupt, so by naming Women in Uganda top political position is just a plus to out nation” she added.
Gorgeous and excited Robinah more deeply extended her gratitude to the president for finally fulfilling his pledge to lift Karamoja subregions by appointing two female ministers from the subregion. Hon Anyakun Esther Devine, state minister for disaster and preparedness, also the Woman MP Nakapiripiti. Akello Rose Lilly Karenga Woman MP as state minister for ethics and integrity. In this kisanja, the sky is the limit especially for Karamoja sub regions. One of our National women council member Hon Asamo Hellen was also appointed minister for Gender, Labour and social development (disability Affairs). We are very grateful.
She concluded by wishing all the best to fellow women that have been trusted with the ministerial positions. That Leadership is God given. They should put all their trust and works in the hands of God.
A few days back, Museveni announced the new Cabinet after an inordinate delay.
To all Ugandan Women, your future has been secured and the Sky is the limit.
