Wyclef Jean was reportedly wrongfully arrested on Tuesday (March 21) and he definitely isn’t shying away from voicing his outrage regarding the situation.

The recording artist was handcuffed and briefly detained by authorities in Los Angeles after being pulled over around 1:25 a.m. on Tuesday morning. The reason? According to Jean, “absolutely nothing.”

According to the New York Times, Jean was mistaken for a suspect in a robbery that took place near the studio he had been working in, resulting in his being detained by the LAPD.

Taking to Twitter, the musician began live-tweeting the situation into the wee hours of the morning, composing a series of detailed posts about the incident and sharing an accompanying video clip to begin capturing evidence he did nothing wrong.

“LAPD another case of mistaken identity,” he wrote. “Black man with red bandana robbed a gas station as I was in the studio working but im in handcuffs?”

As the incident unfolded, it became known that the real suspect had since been apprehended and Jean and the woman he was with were then released, namely because the victims said there was no female in the original getaway car fleeing the scene of the crime.

According to police, the whole situation lasted about six minutes. But that was more than enough time to truly upset the musician, with him claiming he was “instantly hand cuffed before being asked to identify [himself].”

Jean detailed his own experience openly and without a filter, further shining a light on how authority figures routinely treat suspects of color unfairly, thus sparking a heated conversation on social media in turn.
