Music Video review: Love You Everyday by Bebe Cool.

Bebe Cool.

Let’s be honest, shall we? Bebe Cool is not renowned for good, creative videos. He has good music, yes; the kind of music that will blow you off your blissful throne. The kind of music you would nod your head, dance to and, Gagamel enthusiasts, mumble to as they smack their chests in an act of self-praise. The self-styled King of The Jungle’s music has reigned supreme in our music industry which is as unpredictable as our weather.

He has a chain of songs under his belt and, literally of course, etched in his dreadlocks that have remained perched on his head, so as has his facial hair and fierce look. But his videos are, believe me on this, not the kind you would press the replay button with a wide chuckle on your face. Of course the mocking videos that he dutifully does to mock his arch rivals are always worth head-tossing and prodding depending on which camp one subscribes to. Where did all that leave Bebe Cool? They left him in a somewhat sticky situation between a hard rock and a hard place not only locking horns with his arch nemesis, but also raising dust in defiance of the norm braved by local DJs as they continuously play international music and feed Ugandan music to the proverbial dogs. The DJs’, music purists and Bebe Cool naysayers were fast to put words back in his mouth as they defended the claim of good music and good videos.

Maybe, amidst the outbursts on social media, Bebe Cool sauntered in an oven, perhaps Zuena stroking his beard, and baked something that, as I write this, lingers in people’s heads like a bad kiss. His new video “Love You Everyday” is making people to mince their words. They have heaped praise on the darned piece of art and have slowly, silently too, put back their swords in their scabbards.

Admittedly, the video mirrors creativity. It is fresh. It is different. And, above everything, it gives hope to Ugandan music. It tells us that underneath the bubblegum music lay a piece of art that might grip the musical world by its knuckles. The setting is unusual which makes the video seem unusual to the Ugandan standards. Bebe Cool pulls over in a relic vintage car, alone in a somewhat deserted place, more like a desert.

Capital Dreams’ Clarence Peters, the producer of the video, outworked himself on this one. Maybe it shows us why Nigerian music has continuously graced international platforms compared to Ugandan music whose videos are shoddy, like they are shot by the first video camera invention.

Clarence Peters reveals sheer craftsmanship and creativity on this project that might see Bebe Cool climb up astronomical heights. The video that premiered on Channel O is one heck of a good visual piece. Love You Everyday is a typical reggae song where Bebe Cool, even though he veers off the reggae road, finds his roots and comfort in doing. He is composed in the video. And composed is not said of a man who was renowned of jumping on top of tables. But in the video, he shows his musical maturity even though the audio part might come off as a bit lacking. The lyrics wallow in the catchy beat. But nonetheless, the video sells the song. It shoves it down your throat, eh, eyes! Later, vast instruments are shown, still in the wilderness, where lads strum and bang them. Love You Everyday will make you love it everyday. Good video, this one.
