Ugandan rapper Mun G has spoken out about his exit from Baboon Forest, setting the record straight on long-standing rumours that he was fired from the label.

In a recent interview, the “Kunta Kinte” rapper clarified that his departure was peaceful and purely contractual.
According to Mun G, his exit came after the expiry of his 3-year contract with the label, which was headed by GNL Zamba at the time. “I was never fired,” he said. “After my contract ended, I left in peace and went on to start my own group, Kunta Kinte.”
Mun G also shared the reasoning behind his decision to go solo, pointing out that during that period, artists who were signed under others often struggled to gain respect from the public.
“That time they didn’t take a musician serious if they were under someone,” Mun G explained. “Generally, the crowd didn’t take us serious if you were under someone. That was the formula then.”
Since forming Kunta Kinte, Mun G has carved out his own lane in the Ugandan hip-hop scene and continues to influence a new generation of rappers.
