MTN Uganda CEO Mazen Mroué appointed for a new leadership role in the MTN Group

The amiable Chief Executive Officer of MTN Uganda, Mazen Mroué has been appointed as the new Chief Operations Officer of MTN Irancell which is the second largest operator in the MTN Group.

Sifiso Dabengwa, MTN Group President and CEO made the announcement in a Group memo released on 24th June 2014.  According to the memo, Mroué will be succeeded in Uganda by Brian Gouldie, the Chief Marketing Officer of MTN South Africa. Ferdi Moolman, currently the Chief Operations Officer at MTN Irancell, has been appointed to the position of Chief Financial Officer at MTN Nigeria.

Dabengwa, congratulated the Executives on their appointments. “We are delighted that we are able to fill these executive management positions from within our leadership ranks, in line with our leadership development strategy,” said Dabengwa.

Mroué who has served in Uganda since 2012 has been largely described by his staff as a people person whose primary goal was to recognize and reward individual efforts each employee brings to the table. He has ably nurtured his staff to perform beyond the ordinary level mindful of the fact that their efforts are appreciated at the top.

Commenting on his new appointment, Mroué said that he had enjoyed his last two years with MTN Uganda which have been laregly successful particularly because of the tireless support of the MTN staff.

“MTN Uganda has all the right assets and resources available to maintain the steady growth in leading the delivery of a Bold, new Digital world in Uganda,” he said.

In terms of company performance, MTN Uganda has seen steady and rising results in terms of subscriber growth as well as positive financial performance. Under Mazen’s stewardship during the last two years, MTN Uganda Subscriber base grew 30%, Data users 381% and mobile Money Subscribers 95%. MTN Uganda maintained its strong market leadership in all the key parameters and MTN overall market share increased by 5.8%. He leaves MTN Uganda strong.

The Chairman MTN Uganda, Charles Mbire said, “It is a bittersweet feeling as we lose a CEO of his caliber and a person of his nature, but are happy for him on his appointment as Chief Operations Officer of MTN Irancell which is the second largest operator in the MTN Group- we congratulate Mazen on this achievement. His role in Uganda has no doubt been a key catalyst for his ascent to a role with bigger responsibility at MTN Irancell”.

Mazen’s leadership style has earned him many admirers and friends from within and outside the company.
