MTN Marathon Goes To Gulu, Run Expected to Attract Over 1,000 Participants



  • Gulu is the second leg of the 2018 MTN Marathon Season
  • 1,000 participants had registered for the run by Wed 7th Nov 2018
  • There will be a 5km and 10km run
  • Registration is still open till Saturday 10th November

Gulu: From the East in Mbale to the North in Gulu. The 2018 MTN Marathon Season is picking up steam after the Gulu 5km and 10km run were officially unveiled this morning at a press conference held at the Bomah Hotel in Gulu, Northern Region.

Speaking at the event, Valery Okecho, Manager, Corporate Communications, MTN Uganda said that the proceeds from the Gulu registration would be used for maternal health support in Gulu: “We believe that no mother should die giving birth and therefore as we invite people to come, have fun and enjoy the run, they should do so knowing that they have done this for a good cause”.


He, in addition, revealed that the support to the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) from MTN Uganda goes into developing the regional athletics talent: “With this run, and the other three in the regions, we hope to improve the athlete’s timings that will help improve Uganda’s talent of exports that represent us abroad”


These remarks were supported by Omony Okot, the Vice President of the Uganda Athletics Federation who stated that the 7th place position they achieved overall in the Gold Coast Games was thanks to MTN Uganda’s support to the UAF.


He also stated plans were underway to introduce longer versions of the runs and in other parts of the country:  “We are looking forward to better runners coming to take part with the longer versions of the run and hope that other districts will come on board for this run”.


At the launch, other MTN Marathon partners and sponsors who were present included Ibrahim Kakaire, Sales & Marketing Manager – CocaCola Beverages Africa, Bernard Ogwal, Regional Manager, Northern Region at Stanbic Bank and Allan Kyobe, Public Relations Manager Huawei Uganda.

Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards 2018: Here’s the full list of winners

Fashion aficionados were treated to yet another extravaganza of dress and style at the sixth edition of the Abryanz Style & Fashion Awards that took place on Friday at the Kampala Serena Hotel.

The event, a celebration of fashion in Uganda and across Africa attracted some of the continent’s top fashion designers and industry trend- setters who were a picture of glamour as they strutted on the red carpet to the Victoria Ballroom, which hosted the spectacular event.

Hosted by Kenya’s Anita Nderu and Tracy Wanjiru the Ciroc-sponsored event awarded those who are making their mark in the fashion world with the night’s big winner being Fatuma Asha who won the award for Fashion designer of the year (Uganda) and Saida Beauty who was named Makeup artist of the year.

“The fashion industry in Uganda had over the years not been given the respect due to it. I am glad that the ASFAs have changed this and created an awareness to what fashion has to offer and the positive impact it can have to the country’s economy,” said Brian Ahumuza, proprietor of Abryanz Style & Fashion Awards.

The fashion gala also featured showcases from some of Africa’s and Uganda’s top designers, including Nigeria’s Mai Atafo, South Africa’s David Tlale and Laduma Ngoxokolo, Uganda’s Anita Beryl of Beryl Couture, Alex Alecool of Alecool Clothing and Kkoolo among others.

The fashion extravaganza also features performances from Ugandan artists like Spice Diana, Lydia Jasmine, and the highlight of it all being Lillian’s performance attribute to the Late Mose radio.

Quiin Abenakyo wins “Miss World Africa” title at Miss World 2018

Uganda’s very own Miss Uganda 2018 Quiin Abenakyo won the title of Miss World Africa and finished in 4th place out of 118 contestants at the Miss World 2018 pageant which took place in Sanyu City Arena, China on December 8th, 2018. This was the best finish for Uganda in the history of the annual beauty pageant.

Quiin Abenakyo’s stunning looks combined with her intellect, personality and impressive “beauty with a purpose” project impressed the judges throughout the competition. After Quiin won the head to head challenge and was confirmed in the top 40 semi-finalists, the entire nation got behind her to rally for votes. The online voting campaign was enhanced by numerous celebrities, socialites, influencers, politicians and corporate companies who showed support on their social media pages.

Earlier this year in April, Miss Uganda franchise holders Kezzi Entertainment announced their new joint venture partnership with Talent Africa, Uganda’s leading event, talent and entertainment company. Talent Africa promised to bring glamour, flair and showbiz to the Miss Uganda Pageant. After an extremely competitive judging process which at times faced mixed feelings from the public, the Miss Uganda team remained positive and promised to send a beauty queen that could compete on a international level at Miss World. With Quiin Abenakyo’s success at Miss World, it is clear the that judges made the right choice. The judging panel consisted of Brenda Nanyonjo, Sylvia Namutebi, Stella Nantumbwe, Nana Kagga, Brian Ahumuza, Maggie Kigozi and Zari Hassan amongst others.
