In a tragic turn of events, Paddy Sserunjogi, widely known as Sobi and a self-confessed former leader of the notorious ‘Kifeesi’ robbery group in Kampala, met his demise during a violent land dispute in Kibaale LC1, Maddu sub-county, Gomba District. The acting Katonga Region Police Spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Karim Majid, confirmed the incident on Monday evening, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding Sobi’s death.
Reports indicate that the fatal altercation unfolded on a piece of land owned by an individual named Kalisa in Kibaale LC1, Kigumba parish, Maddu sub-county, Gomba district. Approximately 50 individuals armed with sticks, pangas, and spears clashed with another group asserting ownership of the same land. In the ensuing brawl, Sobi lost his life.
Further investigation revealed that the contested land had been purchased by Kalisa for UGX 100 million in 2007, with only UGX 20 million paid before suspicions arose that the land was acquired from an incorrect owner. A separate faction, claiming to be the descendants of the late Paul Kibi, presented land titles and took the matter to court.
Allegedly, the opposing group enlisted the services of hired goons from Kisenyi in Kampala to clear the land, triggering the fatal confrontation on Monday. Superintendent Karim Majid informed journalists that law enforcement officers were actively gathering more information, including details on injuries sustained and the potential discovery of additional casualties.
Sobi gained notoriety in 2017 as the confessed leader of the criminal gang ‘Kifeesi,’ which wreaked havoc in Kampala. The gang engaged in activities ranging from petty theft and armed robberies to murder, terrorizing citizens and targeting forex bureaus in the city. Despite multiple arrests and incarcerations, Sobi and his gang consistently secured bail, resuming their criminal operations each time.
Beyond his criminal exploits, Sobi was implicated in cases of land grabbing, allegedly acting as an enforcer for influential figures seeking to acquire prime pieces of land across the country. In 2021, he forcibly fenced off four acres of a swamp in Nakuwadde village near Bulenga, Wakiso district. In 2022, posing as a Special Forces Command soldier, Sobi orchestrated the seizure of a five-acre parcel from a 94-year-old man in Mukono district, citing a complex land transfer process.
In his final high-profile interview on NBS TV, Sserunjogi expressed political ambitions, adding another layer to the complex legacy left behind by the notorious gang leader.
