On International Women’s Day, Uganda’s beauty industry luminaries gathered for an unforgettable evening, in honor of a decade of excellence, resilience, and bold strides made by makeup artist and businesswoman, Umutoni Monalisa, popularly known as Mona Faces.
Held at the serene Activate Body Therapy in Naguru, the exclusive soiree brought together some of Uganda’s influential socialites, businesswomen, and celebrities, many of whom have had the privilege of working with, or being glammed by Mona over the years. It was an evening of reflection, appreciation, and toasts to the woman who has redefined beauty business in Uganda.
At just 22, Mona embarked on a mission to transform Uganda’s beauty industry, pioneering professional makeup artistry in a market where it was barely recognized. Ten years later, she has built an empire, inspiring and mentoring a new generation of makeup artists.
An emotional Mona expressed her heartfelt gratitude to those who have been part of her journey: “I am deeply grateful to my incredible team for their dedication, commitment, and relentless hard work, in shaping Mona Faces into what it is today. To my friends, your unwavering support and constant push have been instrumental in helping me reach this milestone. And most importantly, to my clients, your trust and loyalty are the foundation of Mona Faces. This brand would not be what it is today without you. And to my mom, who is right here tonight, I owe it all to you.”
She also applauded Johnnie Walker’s She Walks initiative for recognizing and honoring her. “The She Walks program is dear to my heart, because it embodies everything Mona Faces stands for. Thank you, Johnnie Walker, for partnering with me and shining a light on my journey. You have truly exhibited that you’re a brand that honors progress and bold steps,” she added.
The evening was an immersive Johnnie Walker experience, with an open bar, signature cocktails, elegant ambiance, and heartfelt tributes. Guests were also treated to a whisky tasting and mentorship session by the Johnnie Walker Reserve Brand Ambassador, Melanie who engaged the guests on how to best savor their favorite whisky.
Catherine Ndungu, the Marketing & Innovations Director Uganda Breweries Ltd (UBL), praised Mona’s unwavering dedication and impact on the beauty industry.
“Mona’s journey over the past 10 years is a testament to the power of courage, creativity, and resilience. She saw opportunity where others saw uncertainty, and turned her passion into an empire, one that has opened doors for so many young women. At UBL, we are committed to fostering a culture of inclusion and diversity, ensuring that every woman has the chance to walk her own bold path. Tonight, we raise our glasses to Mona, to the sisterhood in this room, and to the boldness that drives us all forward. Cheers to the next decade of excellence!” Catherine Ndungu said.
The night also marked the first anniversary of the She Walks program, that Johnnie Walker launched in March 2024, to shine a light on women making incredible strides across different sectors and fields.
“Tonight, we celebrate not just Mona’s incredible 10-year journey, but the boldness, resilience, and determination of women everywhere. At Johnnie Walker, we believe in uplifting those who challenge the status quo and inspire others to do the same, that’s the spirit of She Walks. Mona, you are a true testament to what it means to Keep Walking, and we raise our glasses to you and to all the incredible women forging their own paths. Here’s to a bold future ahead,” remarked Christine Kyokunda, the Brand Manager Johnnie Walker Uganda.
Mona @ 10 was more than a milestone; it was a celebration of vision, perseverance, and the power of uplifting women.
