During a recent television interview, popular Ugandan singer Pallaso expressed optimism about the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the music industry, likening it to the transformative impact of the internet and social media.

His remarks come amidst a wave of mixed feelings among musicians and fans in Uganda regarding the growing use of AI in music production.
Pallaso remarked, “I think it’s great technology we haven’t known of. It’s fresh technology that we haven’t analyzed to see its fruits. Let’s give it a chance and embrace and see where it shall take us. Like it was for internet and social media growth. Let’s hope it’s for the better.“
This sentiment reflects a broader discussion sparked by the first-ever use of AI in music production in Uganda earlier this year. Swangz Avenue singer Azawi released a song titled “Masaavu,” featuring the voice of the late singer Mowzey Radio, who had tragically passed away.
The inclusion of Mowzey Radio’s voice through AI technology has generated significant controversy within the Ugandan music community.
Some applaud the innovation for its ability to preserve the legacy of beloved artists and create new collaborations beyond the grave. Others, however, raise ethical concerns about the authenticity of such creations and the implications for the artistic integrity of musicians.
The debate surrounding “Masaavu” underscores the evolving relationship between traditional music practices and emerging technologies in Uganda’s vibrant music scene.
While AI presents opportunities for innovation and experimentation, it also raises questions about artistic ethics, ownership, and cultural preservation.
As AI continues to permeate various industries worldwide, including music, stakeholders in Uganda’s music industry are grappling with how to navigate this new frontier responsibly.
Whether AI will ultimately enhance creativity and expand artistic possibilities or pose challenges to established norms remains to be seen.
However, the conversation initiated by Azawi’s groundbreaking use of AI in “Masaavu” reflects a growing awareness of the profound impact technology can have on the music landscape in Uganda and beyond.
