Microsoft to drop support for old Internet Explorer versions

Microsoft has announced that older editions of Internet Explorer will no longer be supported from January 12, 2016.

Only the latest version of the web browser will continue to receive technical support and security patches from this date.

“Customers using Internet Explorer 8, Internet Explorer 9, or Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 7 SP1 should migrate to Internet Explorer 11 to continue receiving security updates and technical support,” said Microsoft in a blog post.

Microsoft is believed to have implemented the move to encourage adoption of its latest updates, and has also announced an Enterprise Mode for Internet Explorer to help customers stay up to date.

The strategy is reminiscent of Google’s stance on Chrome browser updates, with the web giant only supporting the most recent build.

Meanwhile, it was recently reported that Microsoft’s Windows 9 update will do away with the Charms bar of Windows 8 and introduce virtual desktops.
