There is something about J’Something. Something that was witnessed last evening as Mi Casa stepped on stage at the 13th edition of Blankets and Wine. Scores of ladies belched hysterically as the hunky vocalist jumped on stage together with the duo of Mo-T and Dr. Duda that complete a musical threesome that is Mi Casa. The ladies love him.
House music, which is slightly unpopular this side of the continent, took centre stage and got people dancing, wiggling their waists, shaking heads, as they hanged on to every song Mi Casa performed. This was a great musical offing. This was it. The 13th edition of Blankets and Wine lived to its billing regardless of the entry fees of UGX 100,000. This didn’t deter hordes of people, the Kampala middle-class, to throng the Uganda Museum to enjoy their Sunday away.
Gates were opened as early as midday. Thereafter, people started to walk in. Corporate hospitality tents hogged a big space which, once again, reminds us how this Blankets & Wine concept has built its name and commanded great reception within the corporate world. An aroma of muchomo wafted from a nearby ‘sigiri’. Meanwhile, the music blared on.
At the start, there were handfuls of revelers. As the clock ticked on, hordes of people had already sat on their fashionable mats ready to rock and roll.
Deedan Muyiira, the resident emcee, was her usual self; heaving with unmatched energy. The first performer, former TPF contestant Davis Ntare, walked on stage at about 4:00pm. Above us, the sun shone brightly. Great weather for fashion to step forward. As Davis crooned on and on, people continued entering. Beautiful girls clad in their little clothes showing acres of skin. Men dressed in their little shorts and colorful pants and smiles. SnapChatting away. A plethora of selfies were taken. The rich folks ducked under umbrellas and sipped on their expensive wine. Hospitality tents harbored Kampala’s corporates that stayed watching from a distance, bantering and enjoying the freebies on the house.
Later on, more performances came from Jackie Akello, Maureen Rutabingwa (MoRoots) and little known Kirya Kuti. South Africa’s house band Mi Casa closed the performances later in the evening. It wasn’t the end of the event, though. People stayed on, partying.
