Mawejje inspired by Obua, Sekagya

Uganda Cranes international Tonny Mawejje says his recent rejuvenation is down to the desire to emulate retired stars Ibrahim Sekagya and Ibrahim Sekagya.

The midfielder is enjoying a rich vein of form having helped Uganda to two World Cup qualifying games in which he scored in the 1-0 and 2-1 victories over Liberia and Angola respectively.

He continued his scoring form by grabbing another goal for his IBV Vestmannaeyja club in Iceland this week. Mawejje says the need to take responsibility after former skipper Sekagya and talisman Obua called time on their national team careers last year has forced to double his effort. “I’m trying to emulate what the likes of David Obua and Ibra Sekagya used to do for the team before they retired,” Mawejje, 26, told supersport.com.

“They always were our leaders on the pitch and with them, plus Nestroy Kizito, we always felt safe. So we the players now have to take that responsibility.” Mawejje also believes his self-belief is strongly the driving force. “It is down to ‘being confident and having self-belief that this is my time now,” he said.
