The CAF youth qualifiers took its second last piece of the final bend on Friday as the Uganda Cubs were away to Zambia. The U-17 national side lost to hosts Zambia by 2-0 at the Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.
Despite having had a clinical performance in their earlier qualifiers against Seychelles and Rwanda’s Wasps not forgetting their build-up matches in which they scored 25 goals and conceded just 4 goals, the Cubs were not spared by the Zambian young Chipolopolo though produced a good display.
The Zambian young Chipolopolo took a first half lead through skipper Patson Daka before Edwin Chipile’s header in the 61st minute to double the lead for the hosts. However the coaching staff didn’t think it was the worst of the Cubs’ performances and all remain optimistic that they can change the results when they host the game in Kampala at venue that will be decided upon by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) in the return leg.
“It’s so unfortunate that we failed to score even a consolation goal especially given the many chances we created. Nevertheless we shan’t lose hope, these are youngsters that need to be mentored, consoled and proved to that a 2 – 0 deficit can be overcome,” Matia Lule remarked.
After both legs, the victor on aggregate will be set to play in the CAF 2015 Youth tourney that will be due in January 2015, Niger. After the tourney, the last four finalists will then have qualified for the U-17 world cup that will be hosted in Chile.
