MANCHESTER UNITED are close to their fifth signing of the summer as 16-year-old Dutch defender Timothy Fosu Mensah undergoes a medical at the club’s Carrington training complex.
But it’s hardly the news United fans are craving with the window just three days away from slamming shut.
Fosu Mensah joins from Ajax for around £300,000 compensation as the player joins on a youth contract.
It is being reported that United beat-off competition from cross-town rivals Manchester City and Inter Milan to sign the left back.
Fosu Mensah will be the third left back to join United this summer and is a sign of Louis van Gaal’s long-term intent at the club.
It’s a far cry from the calibre of signings United need with the window closing at 11pm on Monday.
Mats Hummels, Thomas Vermaelen and Daley Blind have all been linked with a move to Old Trafford over the summer with none materialising so far.
Van Gaal is also desperately trying to sign Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal but will turn his attention to Sporting’s £24m-rated William Carvalho if that deal falls through.
