Police are investigating a report that rapper DMX robbed an unnamed man in Newark, New Jersey, on Easter Sunday.
While the investigation is in “early stages,” Newark police spokesman Sergeant Ronald Glover told NJ.com that a member of the rapper’s entourage robbed a man at gunpoint at an Exxon station in Newark around 12:30 a.m.
The 21-year-old claimant reported that he recognized the artist, whose real name is Earl Simmons, and approached him outside the gas station at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Sunday. Glover said in a statement that after a brief conversation about rap music, one of DMX’s male entourage members pulled a gun and demanded money from the victim.
The victim reported that after taking $3,200 in cash from his pocket, the “Party Up (Up in Here)” singer grabbed the money and took off in one of four black Cadillac Escalades. The victim followed the cars and was able to record one of the SUV’s license plates, which he reported to police.
No arrests have been made and no criminal charges have been filed yet in the case, PIX 11 reports.
The rapper, who is no stranger to the law, has been arrested numerous times since breaking out on the rap scene in the early ’90s. In 2004 he was famously arrested after attempting to steal a car at New York’s Kennedy Airport, and he was subsequently fined for several traffic violations.
