Legendary Ugandan music producer Magic Washington has boldly declared his unmatched influence in African music production, saying no artist or producer on the continent comes close to his work — except those from South Africa.

“There’s no artist or producer in Africa who can come close to what I do, except South Africans,” Magic Washington said in a recent statement during his interview on NRG Radio.

“All these existing Nigerian producers are doing what I did. But South Africans, their sound is remarkable — they challenged me with their Amapiano.”

Magic Washington, known for shaping Uganda’s soundscape for over 20 years, has produced countless hit songs that have travelled far beyond the country’s borders.

His signature production style has helped define East African music, earning him respect across the continent.

He also acknowledged the impact of South Africa’s fast-growing Amapiano genre, calling it “innovative” and “a sound that truly tested” his creativity as a veteran producer.

Magic Washington Advocates for Fair Treatment and Support for Music Producers

With a career that spans decades, Magic Washington remains one of the few Ugandan producers whose work has crossed continents, helping to put Uganda on the global music map.

His recent remarks underline both his confidence in his legacy and his deep respect for musical innovation, especially from the South.

Magic Washington continues to inspire a new generation of producers, reminding the African music industry of Uganda’s longstanding contribution to the continent’s sound.
