Renowned producer Magic Washington has called on the Ugandan government and industry stakeholders to put in place policies that prioritize and promote local music across all regions of the country.

In a bold statement, Washington emphasized the need for Ugandan artists to take up more space on both local and global stages—not just a select few, but a wide representation from all corners of the country.
“Uganda needs artists to represent us globally—not just one or two, but several,” he said.
The producer, who has worked with some of the biggest names in Ugandan music, suggested that if he were in charge of government or a key regulatory body, he would implement a law to cap foreign music at just 10% of airplay in Uganda.
“Strictly 90% would be Ugandan music, and not just from one region. I would pump guys from the North, from the East, West… and make sure they are superstars everywhere, even in the city,” he added.
Washington also took aim at the longstanding perception that success in Ugandan music is only achievable if an artist sings in Luganda.
He dismissed the idea as “rubbish,” advocating instead for diversity in language and cultural representation.
