Luke Shaw is expected to finally make his competitive debut for Manchester United this weekend.
Shaw, the England international, has recovered from a hamstring injury and is poised to play against West Ham United on Saturday to end a frustrating start to his United career.
The teenager was an unused substitute in the remarkable 5-3 defeat at Leicester City on Sunday after suffering a slight tweak in his hamstring in the build-up to the game.
He has not played for United since his £28million move from Southampton and manager Louis van Gaal criticised his fitness during pre-season, handing him a personalised training programme.
But Shaw is hoping to complete another full week of training and expects to be available for the visit of the Hammers as Van Gaal faces up to a defensive crisis.
United will face West Ham at Old Trafford without injured centre-halves Jonny Evans and Phil Jones, while Tyler Blackett is suspended after his dismissal against Leicester.
The stunning collapse against Leicester exposed United’s lack of options and leadership in defence, with Chris Smalling also struggling after his introduction as a replacement for Evans.
Shaw’s return, however, is likely to ensure £16million signing Marcos Rojo plays as a left-sided centre-half on Saturday.
