Liverpool defender Habib Kolo Toure thinks Ghana deserved to win the Africa Cup of Nations as much as they did. The Ivorians were crowned champions after a 9-8 penalty shootout in Equatorial Guinea at the 2015 AFCON finals.
“This is my third final and I had lost two. The game was intense and tough. Ghana deserved to win as well as us. You know penalties are so bad. But at the end of the day, we are very happy this time God has given us the trophy because in penalties, it is all about God for me,” the defender told SuperSport.
The 34-year-old who earlier hinted about retirement from National team football after AFCON 2015 is yet to say anything concerning the future of his career with the Elephants since winning the title which he chose to dedicate to the golden generation of the Ivorians.
“But we’ve been working really hard; the country and our generation has been waiting for that for so many years and I want to dedicate this win to all the generations. We had all the players who came here and didn’t, such as Didier Drogba, Didier Zokora, Arouna Dindane and so many players. For me, I just want to name those guys but there are plenty of other players at the back of that,” Toure added.
Ivory Coast have now won the Africa Cup of Nations twice and beating Ghana at both occasions on penalty shootouts after a goalless 120 minutes. In 1992 and 2015 with an 11-10 and 9-8 score respectively.
