Uganda’s representatives in the 2014 CAF Champions League, KCCA FC, have started 2014 in style by winning the Mapinduzi Cup in Zanzibar yesterday.
Herman Wasswa netted the lone goal early in the first half to give KCCA a 1-0 win over Tanzanian giants Simba SC in the final played at the Amaan Stadium.
Wasswa, who was the top scorer in the Ugandan league, netted in the 20th minute off a Habib Kavuma cross.
“We deserved to win this trophy because the players have been determined to prove a point. This tournament where we played six games has helped us prepare well for the Champions League,” Nsimbe told MTNFootball.com on the phone from Zanzibar.
To reach the finals, Nsimbe’s team ejected defending champions Azam FC 3-2 in the first semifinal last week, while Simba saw off another Ugandan side URA FC 2-0.
The coach said despite playing without some of their star players, who are with the national team in South Africa for the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN), his team responded well.
The Ugandan champions used the Zanzibar tournament to prepare their team ahead of their preliminary CAF Champions League tie against El Merreikh of Sudan next month.
Besides the cash prize, the champions also got medals, while URA’s Owen Kasule, who emerged top scorer of the tournament, also received a cash prize.
