For the first time since the launch of MTN Mobile Money in 2009, individuals and companies can now easily effect payment for licenses, fines, taxes and other fees to Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) using a secure and trusted platform. This follows the signing of a partnership between KCCA and MTN Uganda that will enable members of the public and businesses pay for various City Authority taxes and levies. This service guarantees convenience to the customer and a more effective revenue collection mechanism for KCCA.
This is the latest in a series of innovations on the MTN Mobile Money platform as the company continues its initiative to drive financial inclusion through an affordable and trusted solution. To-date, MTN Mobile Money is used for payment of bills and utilities, school fees, air tickets and a host of other merchant services. MTN is steadily working on even more solutions that continue to transform the way Ugandans live their lives and conduct business.
“Going to the bank is not easy these days. Queuing and filling forms, and following complex processes can be quite inconveniencing. MTN Mobile Money is partnering with the city authority to ease the way services are being delivered,” said MTN Chief Executive Officer Brian Gouldie.
“This partnership also offers us the opportunity to extend our proposition for SMEs and traders around Kampala, and for KCCA and its stakeholders to have direct access to our growing network of agents. Being able to use Mobile Money for payment of KCCA’s fees offers ease and convenience to our customers,” he added.
MTN Mobile Money usage continues to impact Ugandans with over 160,000 people currently employed through the service. “It is therefore a remarkable milestone to have KCCA embracing MTN Mobile Money and as we launch this partnership, I’m hopeful that the clients of KCCA will find MTN Mobile Money an easy, convenient, safe and secure service,” the CEO concluded.
Earlier this year, MTN launched “Deposit and Withdraw”, a product that enables registered customers, with bank accounts of partnering financial institutions to deposit and withdraw money directly to their mobile money accounts.
By June 30th 2015, MTN had recorded a 12.8 percent increase in Mobile Money subscribers, from 7.3 million (at the end of 2014) to 8.2 million.
Commenting on the partnership, MTN’s General Manager Financial Services Phrase Lubega said, “Prior to the launch the KCCA solution, overall figures indicated that more than 85 percent of mobile bill payment collections in Uganda are made through the MTN Mobile Money platform.”
“Continuing to integrate mobile money into mainstream financial services will therefore further expand the digital financial ecosystem which in turn will facilitate further delivery of financial inclusion for all persons across Uganda,” he added.
Commenting on this partnership, KCCA’s Executive Director Jennifer Musisi said; “Today’s event presents a historic moment for both KCCA and MTN as it seeks to broaden the existing revenue collection channels by bringing on board mobile money services to facilitate KCCA fees collection.”
This development means MTN Mobile Money subscribers can now simply utilize the Mobile Money menu, via *165#, to effect their payments to KCCA. The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is the governing body of the Capital City and administers Capital City on behalf of the central government.
