The league defending champions, KCCA FC beat SC Victoria University 4-3 in penalty shoot-outs after the two teams played to a 1-1 draw on Friday afternoon at Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium.
It was striker Henry Lopidia who missed the penalty for SC Victoria to give KCCA FC the trophy.
New signing Steven Bengo who crossed from SC Villa made a good drive in the 23rd minute before setting up Herman Wasswa who slotted the ball past advancing Benjamin Ochan.
Wasswa who finished top scorer last season was very quick on the ball before Ochan could get his hands to it. With KCCA FC dominating play, they should have increased their lead, but looked blunt up-front.
SC Victoria University who will represent Uganda in the CAF Confederations Cup next year returned strongly to dominate play in the second half. Cranes midfielder Denis Iguma equalized for SC Victoria University with a well timed header off a corner in the 74th minute.
The two coaches made several changes, but no team managed to score the winning goal. Brian Majwega, David Aloro, Tom Masiko and veteran Richard Malinga then converted their penalties for KCCA FC, while Savio Kabugo, Dennis Iguma and goalkeeper Benjamin Ochan netted for the Univeristy side. Fred Kibirige and Lopidia missed for SC Victoria University, while Tony Odur also missed for KCCA FC.
“It is good to start the season with a trophy and we promise to work harder throughout the league season to retain the trophy,’ said KCCAFC’s coach Nsimbe. The SC Victoria coach Alex Isabirye said he was proud of his boys who fought from a goal down and took the game to penalties.
KCCA FC will open the league season on August 20 against archrivals SC Villa.
