Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has publicly debunked claims that singer Pallaso was knighted by the Kabaka of Buganda to be called a “Sir.”

In a recent interview with Sanyuka TV, Mayiga clarified that although Pallaso was invited to perform at a royal event two years ago, he was never officially knighted.
Pallaso, whose real name is Pius Mayanja, had previously boasted of receiving the honorary title of “Sir” from the Kabaka, portraying himself as the first Ugandan artist to be recognized in such a way by the monarch.
However, Katikiro Mayiga dismissed these claims, stating that such honors are granted based on merit and character, not simply through participation in royal ceremonies.
“The Kabaka bestows knighthood on individuals who genuinely contribute to the kingdom and carry themselves with dignity,” Mayiga emphasized. He noted that true recipients of the title include celebrated artists like Mathias Walukagga, Mesach Ssemakula, Paul Saaka, Moses Matovu, and the Afrigo Band—all of whom have consistently honored and promoted Buganda’s culture through their music and conduct.
Mesach Ssemakula, for example, was knighted for producing inspirational songs for the youth and maintaining a respectable public image. “He has never engaged in fights or used vulgar language,” the Katikiro remarked. “There’s a female artist I recently saw embarrassing herself on camera. Ssemakula has never stooped to that level.”
