Kanye West Slams Fake Nelson Mandela Quote

A fake story posted on satirical website The Daily Currant resulted in Kanye West setting the record straight about his thoughts on Nelson Mandela Monday (Dec. 9). The site claimed West called himself “the next Nelson Mandela” in an interview with Chicago radio station WGCI, prompting backlash from readers.

“The #SamsungTwitterParty is back! Get ready to party the night away come 19th December at Zone 7 with fellow tweeps. Entrance is 15,000shs. Call 0775439894 for details. Great music and drinks.”

West’s recent rants, both on stage and in radio interviews promoting his Yeezus tour, may have helped make the alleged quotes believable to some. The story was shared on Twitter more than 8,000 times before making its way through the news cycle and finally to West, who tweeted Tuesday, “Respect to Mandela and his family.”

In the next tweet, West directly targeted the story. “Despite recent media reports, I’ve never said anything to dishonor or trivialize the life or transition of one of the most inspiring leaders,” ‘Ye maintained. “I’d like to address the false stories and noise that have been engineered by the media. At a young age my mother taught me the importance of his work. Mandela sacrificed his life for the betterment of mankind.”

West ended with a show of gratitude for the respected civil rights figure who passed away  last Thursday (Dec. 5) at the age of 95. “Thank you, Mandela, for your life’s work and may it serve as a guiding light to illuminate our future,” he wrote.
