Many Ugandan celebrities have been preaching doom for Urban TV presenter Mary Luswata, and the list of Luswata’s enemies keeps growing with every episode of the show that the station airs thanks to the controversial statements that she makes on her Scoop on Scoop show.
Last week Bryan Kella McKenzie, a Ugandan TV and Radio presenter went on to Facebook and wrote an open letter to Mary Luswata after she attacked him on air. Bryan warned Luswata and promised to retaliate should she ever say something about his family again.
Kalungi Kabuye, an editor and lifestyle writer at Vision Group, the same company that Luswata works for has come out to side with Luswata despite all the things that are being said about her by Ugandan “celebs.”
“Ugandan public personalities (I would rather not use the word ‘celebrities’) have this thing that if anybody says something they do not like then they are trying to destroy them. They cry out how they have come from very far, worked hard, and now because somebody said something about them, their families are in peril. … A friend of mine put it very succinctly; he said the problem with our public personalities is that they are still basically villagers. They do not understand or appreciate the kind of society we are living in today.” Reads part of Kalungi’s argument.
To him (Kalungi), celebrities can be trashed and they should never complain since they joined public life well aware of the consequences. He argues that TV shows about celebrities have the highest rankings in the world and Luswata is doing the right thing. He gave examples of the Wendy William show and TMZ celebrity shows.
“It might be a cliché that ‘no publicity is bad publicity’, but it is a lesson some of our public personalities will have to learn. Nobody owes them anything, or gives a hoot whether McKenzie came from Rutooma, Kashari to the city to achieve my goals in life.” Kalungi added.
