Fast-rising Ugandan singer Joshua Baraka has shared a word of advice for fellow artists looking to break into international music scenes: be ready to invest in your dreams.

Currently one of the most talked-about Ugandan artists performing abroad, Baraka emphasized the importance of stepping out of comfort zones and actively seeking the right people to collaborate with.

“I put in a lot of effort and money,” Baraka said. “If you want connections, for instance in Kenya, I can tell you I’m going there next week—but it’s up to you to foot the bills of what comes next.”

Baraka’s comments reflect a growing sentiment among top-tier Ugandan musicians who have made it on the international stage.

Just like Eddy Kenzo, who has previously addressed similar concerns, Baraka believes that connections are valuable but not handed out freely—they require initiative and commitment.

Still, Baraka made it clear that he’s not unwilling to help.

“When all is done, I can’t refuse to introduce the artist to my people,” he added, implying that the real hurdle is artists being willing to take the first financial and professional steps.
