Africa has produced many immensely talented musicians. Some African musicians have made wise use of their talent and have become wealthy. They are also very popular in Africa and other parts of the world. We don’t have the actual figures but these are the most successful in the continent.

Here is a brief overview of the top 10 richest African musicians as of 2015.

Manu Dibango

African music legend, Manu Dibango is arguably the most successful and richest African musician. The Cameroon-born musician wealth and success comes from concerts, record sales and other investments.


Youssou N’dour

Africa’s most electrifying entertainer. This talented percussionist, composer, song writer, entrepreneur, actor and politician is from Senegal. He is the second richest musician in Africa. Arguably Africa’s most electrifying and mesmerizing musician of all time. He is the owner of the biggest media house in Senegal, the Grammy-award winner owns a Nightclub, a record label and a Television station.


Koffi Olomide

Born in 1956, this Congolese singer, dancer, producer and composer is immensely popular in Africa. He charges up to 100,000 Euros per show. Although his exact net worth is unknown, Koffi Olomide has been very successful in the music industry. He earned his first degree in Business Economics and a Masters Degree in mathematics from the University of Paris. He has released over 30 albums during the course of his career which have sold millions across the world. He reportedly bought a house in Atlanta, US. He is married and has seven children.



Popularly known as P-Square, Peter and Paul are twins from Nigeria. These R&B musicians earn more than $150,000 per show. They produce and release their music albums through Square Records.



This Nigerian singer, songwriter and harmonica player has many awards to his credit. His uptempo dance fusion of Afro-Beats and electronic dance music “Oliver Twist” is immensely popular. Has sold more than four million albums worldwide and signed with Kanye West’s record label GOOD Music.

Salif Keita

This Afro-pop singer and song writer deserves the title “Golden Voice of Africa”. He is a citizen of Mali. Born in 1949, Salif Keita is a direct descendant of the founder of the Mali Empire Sundiata Keita. According to many people who have interacted with him, he is humble and a wonderful human being. He has a private island in France.


Fally Ipupa

This Congolese singer and songwriter released his first album “Droit Chemin” in 2006. He has many awards to his credit. He has modernized the Lingala music. He also makes money by endorsing brands and performing at shows.


2Face Idibia

Popularly known as 2Face Idibia, Innocent Ujah Idibia was born in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. He is a popular singer, songwriter, actor and record producer. He has five albums and many awards to his credit. He is a successful entrepreneur with investments in real estate in Nigeria. He also owns a night club. He charges between $50,000 and $80,000 per show.


Hugh Masekela

This South African singer, composer, flugelhornist, cornetist and trumpeter is an immensely talented Jazz artist. He was nominated for Grammy Award in the “Best Contemporary Pop Performance – Instrumental” category in 1968.


Banky W

This Nigerian R&B musician is regarded by many as the “King of African R&B”. He was born in the US and grew up in Lagos. He began singing in church at an early age and won many music competitions during his student years. He also makes money through endorsements. Banky W is a musician with a heart. He is involved in many philanthropic activities.


Jose Chameleone

This popular Ugandan reggae musician sings mostly in Luganda, English and Swahili. His music is a perfect blend of Ugandan folk music, Central African Rumba and zouk on a background of reggae. He is also known for his collection of cars. Cadillac Escalade, Mercedes Benz ML 200 super customer convertible and Premio are among his priced possessions.


The above-mentioned musicians inspire many young musicians who intend make a career in music.

StarTimes wins “Africa Best Content App” at Digital Impact Awards Africa 2019

The grand finale of the 6th annual Digital Impact Awards Africa 2019 (DIAA) was on 20th September 2019 at Mestil Hotel in Kampala, Uganda. Under the theme “Include Everyone”, The Digital Impact Awards Africa is a platform that promotes Digital inclusion, financial inclusion and cyber security.

DIAA is Africa’s most important gathering of C-Level Executives, and Senior Digital and IT executives. The event was a climax of the Include Everyone- Digital and Financial Inclusion Summit which explores the strategic trends and technologies that are shaping the future of Digital, IT and business. The DIAA seek to recognize, celebrate and appreciate different individuals and organizations that are spearheading the use of digital mediums to better serve their communities. The awards had 16 Uganda categories and 6 Continental categories. There was a jury/research panel assessment and public survey/vote to determine eventual winners. StarTimes was nominated in two categories; Africa Best Content App (Africa), and Disruptive Innovation (Uganda).In the ‘Africa Best Content App’ category, the StarTimes ON App was up against Kwese iflix, DSTV Now and Netflix. StarTimes won the accolade!While in the ‘Disruptive Innovation’ category, the StarTimes ON App was running against MTN MoMoCard, SafeBoda Pairing, Citimasta App, Standard Chartered Bank, and YO TV who won this award. Airtel named Uganda’s top tax contributor

Airtel Uganda has been awarded Uganda’s Largest Tax Payer and recognised for their compliance in remitting taxes to Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).

The announcement was made during the Uganda Revenue Authority 14th Taxpayers Appreciation Awards – 2019 held in Kampala on Friday.

Airtel Uganda paid Shs136 billion in the financial year 2018/19 winning the Excel Award for the year.

“Airtel has contributed over Shs136 billion in the financial year 2018-19 making it the biggest contributor of income tax in the last financial year,” a statement from Uganda Revenue Authority read in part.

Handing over the award, the Minister of Finance Hon. Matia Kasaijja congratulated Airtel upon the achievement and lauded the company for their contribution towards the development of Uganda through tax.

Mr. V.G. Somasekhar, the Managing Director of Airtel Uganda, thanked Uganda Revenue Authority for recognizing their contribution to the company’s GDP and the work they are doing to remain complaint. He also thanked Uganda Communication Commission, Ministry of Information Communication and Technology and the Government of Uganda for the support rendered to Airtel.

“It is an honor for Airtel to be recognized as the largest tax payer in Uganda. We are thankful to our customers and partners who have made Airtel their network of choice,” he noted.

“We believe leadership is a responsibility – one that we have happily taken on and this recognition is yet another milestone and an affirmation that Uganda has noticed. We remain committed to the leadership of the telecommunications sector and compliance is an integral aspect of that commitment,” he added.

The award comes on the heels of the company’s massive investment in innovation, network and infrastructural expansion.
